Our
Purpose.
 The Spelman Student
Government Association (SSGA) is a body composed of elected and
appointed student representatives which meets regularly to discuss
matters of general concern regarding students. The assembly acts as a
liaison between the student body and the faculty, staff and
administration by presenting proposals, programs, activities, and
resolutions that reflect the tenor of student of opinion. The SSGA
also seek to foster sisterhood among Spelman women as well as to help
students gain an understanding of themselves, society, and the
African-American heritage.
In addition to discussing educational and
social issues confronting Spelman College students, the SSGA is
responsible for allocating funds to all student clubs and organizations
to assist them with their programming and leadership needs.
Spelman women are encouraged to get involved
in various committees, programs, and activities sponsored by the SSGA.
The advisor of the Spelman Student Government Association is the
Director of Student Activities.
Our Goal.
The goal of the 2002-2003 SSGA is to serve as agents
of social, political, and academic change for Spelman students and the
Atlanta community. SSGA has been active on Spelman's campus for many
decades. The SSGA ask that all of our sisters support and communicate
with the governing body. The association acts upon the problems
that are addressed in our community. The SSGA asks that you do not stop
reading about SSGA at this homepage, but look through this website to
discover endeavors of Spelman's campus and events that are happening in
our community. Each organization is encouraged to create a webpage in
order to communicate with the students on campus about their
organization.
Our history.
Before the SSGA school year 2002-2003, the Spelman
Student Government Association was composed of programming and governing
committees along with Ms. Spelman and her Court. The SSGA officers of
the 2002-2003 year were inducted on April 22, 2002 in the Manley Atrium.
This induction was the beginning of a new era for the SSGA. The
organization is solely a governing body. The programming board and
Ms. Spelman and her Court are separate from SSGA.
Greetings from the President
It is with honor and humility that I
welcome you to the Spelman College Student Government Association
website. By being a Cohesive, Hardworking, Approachable, Novel, Genuine,
and Ethusiastic Board of change agents on Spelman's campus and in our
community, the SSGA Executive Board hopes to serve as the voice and the
spirit of Spelman women. Everyone has a part to play in this great
journey. As you explore this website, reflect on what part you can
play; decide what part you will play; and play that part. Have no
doubts or equivocations, for, you are the CHANGE you want to see on our
campus and in our world.
Most Sincerely,
E.Joyce Iyamu
2002-2003 SGA President
